Welcome to Mount Meru Game Lodge!

Nestled between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary lies midway between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha. The lodge is located within 33 acres of mature, well manicured gardens bounded on one side by the tranquil waters of the Usa River and on the other by the Sanctuary where our wildlife and birdlife reside. This wildlife and birdlife provide many of our guests with their first exciting game viewing experience.

The lodge has a total of 15 double or twin en-suite bedrooms and 2 suites.

Each single, double, queen and king sized bed at the lodge is 4 poster over which is draped a hand-made mosquito net. Each standard room also includes a writing desk and chair, luggage rack, wardrobe or walk-in cupboard and is tastefully finished in earth tone fabrics decorated with traditional Maasai finishes. All rooms have a veranda with comfortable chairs where guests can sit and enjoy their surroundings.

The ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’ and ‘Mount Meru’ suites are located in their own private garden overlooking the game sanctuary. Each has an open plan lounge and bedroom area as well as a private garden gazebo where you can sit, relax and soak up the unique atmosphere of the Lodge. Each suite also has its own fireplace which can be used on chilly evenings and the Mount Meru Suite has an adjoining room making it ideal for families with children.

The suites at Mount Meru Game Lodge are available on a Full Board all-inclusive basis only to include all meals, all wines, spirits, beers and minerals as well as all personal laundry.

The Lodge

The main building of the lodge consists of a reception area, lounge and bar. The lounge, with its enormous picture windows and comfortable furniture, provides for relaxation in intimate surroundings. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of spirits, beers and minerals which are complemented by a carefully selected collection of wines. To the front of the main building is a terrace which is shaded by enormous old Mango trees and which enjoys magnificent views over mature, carefully tended gardens to the Sanctuary beyond.

In the grounds of the lodge can be found an ‘outdoor dining room’ which consists of a garden, a covered patio and a small open plan kitchen where meals are prepared. The garden with its camp fire allows our guests to dine under the African star-lit sky whilst listening to the exotic night sounds.

A Brief History

Established in 1959, the lodge was created to provide intimate accommodation to discerning lovers of both wildlife and nature. The sanctuary was founded to offer refuge to orphaned and injured animals and to prepare them for their return to the wild. The lodge & sanctuary combine to offer you a truly unique experience during your stay in Arusha.

The Sanctuary

The Mount Meru Game Sanctuary was established in 1960 and over the course of the last half a century and more has received rescued animals from the wild. Normally either injured or orphaned, the sanctuary’s first priority is always to rehabilitate these animals and to return them to their natural habitat. In cases where this is not possible, they are released into the sanctuary grounds where, joined by an enormous variety of birdlife, they are able to enjoy the unique freedom offered by our very safe environment. By choosing to stay with us, our guests play a very important role in helping these animals since the activities of the sanctuary are financed entirely by the lodge.

Mount Meru Game Lodge is extremely fortunate to receive daily visits from troops of Black & White Colobus Monkeys.

The Usa River, the magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the wildlife, birdlife, trees, plants and shrubs all combine to make Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary an exquisite natural wonderland.

TrekkingCultural & Educational Walks

Mount Meru Game Lodge offers unique ‘Cultural and Educational’ walks into Usa River, a small township of approximately 20,000 inhabitants located a few minutes on foot from the property. These walks provide a unique insight to our guests, without the nuisance factor of hawkers, on what authentic life for Tanzanians really entails. They are guided by our own staff, are offered free of charge to guests of the lodge and are very much appreciated by all who participate in them.

Coffee Tours

Coffee tours can be arranged to a collection of 20 or so small holder Coffee farmers who are located close by the lodge on the slopes of Mount Meru. These farmers produce anywhere between 100 kilos and 3,000 kilos of Coffee per year, all of which is washed and dried on the farms and then processed in Arusha. These tours allow you to witness this process first hand as well as to buy some Coffee to take home with you. Intimate Places purchases all of the Coffee which is consumed by our guests from these farmers as part of our corporate social responsibility program.

Nominated as one of the top 10 Golf courses in Africa, the Kilimanjaro Golf and Wildlife Estate is located a short distance from the lodge. It comprises an 18 hole championship golf course together with a real estate development set within an area of outstanding natural beauty. Guests wishing to play a round of golf from Mount Meru Game Lodge may do so during the course of their stay.

Nduruma Polo Club

Nduruma Polo & Country Club is located on a 3,800 acre estate which enjoys breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and the Maasai Steps (weather permitting of course). The clubs facilities, which include a club house, swimming pool, gymnasium and tennis courts are all built in the centre of two beautifully maintained polo fields which are often visited by a variety of wildlife. The club provides a very special outing from Mount Meru Game Lodge for those of our guests who are looking for something different to do in Arusha.
